"It appeared as if I had invited the audience into the water with me, and it conveyed the sensation that being in there was absolutely delicious."

It's basically a history of Britain from a socialist/communist perspective. Oh those nasty businessmen of the industrial revolution. Oh the Windrush, how marvellous - and of course the biggest sacred cow of all, the NHS! Yes the wonderful NHS founded by a socialist, and about as efficient as the Soviet tractor industry.
Huw Edwards spends the whole first section moaning about how awful the Industrial Revolution was because it "uprooted communities" (because they stopped starving in ditches and went and got jobs and homes) and talking about what a "dire, scary" time it was and how "dangerous" Britain was. Here I was thinking that life expectancy doubled almost overnight and the stranglehold of the aristocracy was broken, lifting millions from death to middle-class wealth. Here I was thinking the Industrial Revolution was the basis of all modern civilization... and all the BBC can do is moan about how awful all that capitalism was. I
expected better, even from them.... and then the NHS comes on and we get some awful, cringeworthy paean to how "wonderful" the NHS is and how it's Britain's "greatest achievement".
The BBC and its past-it, moaning, insufferably left-wing commentators have ruined an otherwise rather excellent ceremony.
